Laser Periodontal Therapy (LANAP)™

You brush and floss like a champ, lead a healthy lifestyle, and make sure to visit the dentist regularly. There’s simply no way you’re at risk for gum diease, right? Unfortunately, we’re all at risk and about 60% of the population is simply genetically susceptible to contracting the condition. No one wants to hear that he or she has gum disease, but if you're one of the many Americans adults who have been told you need traditional cut and sew gum surgery to treat advanced gum disease, you should know there's a more conservative, modern alternative. It's called Laser Periodontal Therapy, and this breakthrough in periodontal treatment restores your gum tissue to health without invasive surgical methods.

Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss among adults and reports indicate that millions of people are unaware they have gum disease. There are a number of factors that can increase your chances for developing gum disease such as smoking, poor nutrition, stress, and poor oral hygiene. Studies now reveal there are links between gum disease and heart disorders, pregnancy, puberty, stress, grinding teeth, and diabetes. When gum disease sets in, it destroys soft tissue, breaking the strong bond between teeth and supporting gums. So, though you might think a little puffiness and sensitivity around your teeth is normal, you could be ignoring harmful bacteria that, if left untreated, can cause jawbone deterioration and tooth loss.

Remember, no part of you should bleed when you clean it and your gums are no exception. If your gums bleed when you brush your teeth, or if they appear red, swollen, or are tender to the touch, you may have gum disease. Depending upon the severity of your case, we may recommend a deep scaling to reverse the condition. If your case is more severe, we may suggest the LANAP (laser periodontal therapy) procedure performed with the Periolase laser to treat the pockets infected by bacteria and periodontal disease. This procedure, combined with ultrasonic techniques, will help remove the disease, restore your gums to optimal health, and help you smile again.

As always, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. The best way to prevent severe gum disease is to treat it early, before it gets a chance to progress.
